How to Reduce the Appearance of Acne Scars

Expert-Approved Tips for Reducing the Appearance of Acne Scars

Acne is never fun.  To add insult to injury, these blemishes can also have lasting effects, even long after the bumps themselves are gone.  Dermatologists call these marks acne scars or hyperpigmentation.

Why We Scar

Acne scars are visible marks made by a pimple or cyst.  According to Dr. Engelman, there are two types: texture scars and dark marks.  The former involve a change in skin texture, which can result in depressed or raised ridges.  The latter, on the other hand, are not "true scars" - in fact, they are actually post-imflammatory hyperpigmentation caused by cystic acne.

Treatments

Dr. Engelman suggest using products with salicylic or glycolic acid to aid with cell turnover; this will remove that darkened top layer.  She also recommends using brightening ingredients, like vitamin C which is a lightening product.

Treating textured scars involve resurfacing the skin and promoting cell turnover.  Dr. Engelman notes that effective options include dermarollers and doing deep chemical peels.

But the most important piece of advice she can give when dealing with both types of acne scars is to never pick them.  "You can actually give yourself new scars or worsen existing blemishes by picking at your skin," she concludes.

Skin Care Products That Keep Your Skin Firmer For Longer

As we age, our skin forms fine lines and wrinkles: symptoms of slower cell turnover and less collagen production.  Ultimately, this is why our skin starts to look thinner and "crepey."  The skin, exposed to sun, becomes paper thin and takes on a loose, crinkled appearance.  Other factors such as environmental pollution, smoking, and alcohol consumption also play a role in this transition.

However, if you abstain from those bad habits, there are effective products on the market to help prevent the natural thining that is expected with age.  Look for products that are designed to tighten, plump, and have SPF.

My Top Picks:

TimeWise Volu-Firm Cleanser with Hyaluronic Acid, designed to add volume and "plumpness."  $28  This moisture-rich, cashmere-soft foam delivers benefits far beyond other anti-aging face cleaning products.  https://www.marykay.com/bstillings/en-us/products/skincare/collection/timewise-repair/timewise-repair-volufirm-foaming-cleanser-100901

TimeWise Targeted Action Toning Lotion $32  Crepey skin can actually occur anywhere on your body.  This dermotoligist tested lotion tightens and firms skin all over (arms, legs, chest) and is designed for sensitive skin.  https://www.marykay.com/bstillings/en-us/products/skincare/collection/timewise/timewise-body-targetedaction-toning-lotion-990277960

Replenishing Serum C+E $58.  This best selling serum fights back against the environmental damages with an antioxidant megaboost of C and E. The benefit of having them both in the serum results in brighter, firmer and glowing skin. https://www.marykay.com/bstillings/en-us/products/skincare/collection/timewise/timewise-replenishing-serum-c-e-990279409

Repair Volu-Firm Lifting Serum: $70.  Sagging jawlines, hollow cheeks, and crepiness on the neck can all be tackled with this age-fighting facial serum that uses peptides, plant stem cells and advanced edtracts to deliver impressive results.   https://www.marykay.com/bstillings/en-us/products/skincare/concern/anti-aging/timewise-repair-volufirm-advanced-lifting-serum-99015683

Is your mascara NOT coming off? Here is a life hack!

Case Study:  Is the Eye Makeup Remover failing...or are you failing? 😅

Why am I having a hard time taking off my mascara at night?  Why am I waking up with mascara shadows still under my lashes?  The eye makeup remover is not working.

These are things I said to myself last week and these are things that I have heard friends and clients say. HOWEVER, they are not things I said to myself last month.  Frankly, I've never said these things to myself.

Why the change?

For years, I have used the BEST oil free eye makeup remover in the world and I have also used the BEST mascara on the market and I have never had troubles taking off my mascara at night.  Until 2 weeks ago.  What the heck has changed?  I had not changed my mascara or my eye makeup remover.  Yet, now I was struggling with the same concern as a few of my customers.  We all use the same mascara brand and eye makeup remover....so why is it difficult at times and not difficult at others?

Then it hit me.........

💥 I could not remember how OLD my mascara was.  YIKES!

I had been "meaning" to get a fresh tube for over a month now. I could still get some out of the current tube, so the thrifty me was trying to use it all up first.

After a week of struggling to get the mascara off at night, I decided to try an experiment.  Let's get a new tube, same bottle of eye makeup remover, and see if there is a difference.

💥 BAM!!!  No raccoon eyes in the morning!  Problem solved.

👮 The truth is, mascara should be replaced every three to six months if you use your mascara regularly.  The most important way to tell if your mascara won't do its job any longer is to check its performance and dryness.  Clearly, I was using mascara that was drying out and not coming off smoothly.

The bottom line: Get a fresh tube of MASCARA!

Is Skin Purging Real or Are Your New Products Irritating Your Complextion?

Your skin may be your body's largest organ, but it's not infallible.  In fact, it's absolutely prone to irritation, especially if you regularly test new facial products; these could cause a flaring up on your complexion.  But it's important to note that general irritation or dermatitis (which feels itchy and more like a rash) differs from purging-which can be a sign that a new product is working!  The products that cause the phenomenon are often retinoid-based.  If you notice increased breakouts after you begin use (I DID!!!!) you are likely experiencing it first hand.

But what is this condition and how is it different from acne?

What Cause a Skin Purge?

Skin purging happens when your skin cell turnover cycle rapidly increases after a procedure or a chemical application.  Skin cells turn over every 14-28 days normally.  However, with the addition of a product, inflammation underneath the skin's surface can be brought to light more immediately.

How is a Skin Purge different from Acne?

Inflammation associated with a "retinization period" more often results in redness, dryness, and scaling....as well as worsened acne.  A common warning is things may get worse before they get better.

Acne is generally caused by hormones, stress, diet, and genetics when pores get clogged by oil.  Skin purging on the other hand, will usually happen 4-6 weeks after the use of a new retinol or vitamin A based product.

What are treatment options for Skin Purging?

How to heal your skin during a purge....start slow.  The Clinical Solutions $120 product I used recommends an 8 week retinization period where you begin once a week and increase it as tolerated.  If skin is still irritated I recommend the Moisture Renewing Gel Mask $22 or the Intense Moisturizing Cream $32.  Daily gentle cleansers like the Volu-Firm Cleanser $28 also help heal the skin.

For more information about purging, check out the Facebook study group I created to support women through the retinzation period and treating the process.

Your Guide to Dealing With Existing Sun Damage

While there's nothing better than being outdoor in the summer, prolonged sun exposure cause significant changes in the skin, including "sun spots", wrinkles, and other issues.  These changes happen when UV light hits skin unprotected by sunscreen and causes DNA changes at the cellular level.  What's more, as we age, the visible signs of this process only become more prominent and more difficult to treat.  Dealing with existing sun damage, however, can be tricky to navigate, and that's especially true when it comes to identifying which signs and sympotoms are causes for concern.

What does sun damge look like?

Obviously, the earliest sign is sunburn.  Even though that may only last a few days, a mild sunburn can lay the foundation for years of problems at the cell level - brown spots (I have one), freckles(check that too), and broken capillaries (I have this around my nose now....where I sustained years of sunburn).

How Can You Treat Sun Damaged Skin?

At home remedies like topical retinoids (Clinical Solutions $120) and chemical peels (Radiance Facial Peel $65) have proven successful in resurfacing and rejuvenating the skin.  Certain LED treatments have also helped to fade existing brown spots.

Clinical Solutions: https://www.marykay.com/bstillings/en-us/products/skincare/mary-kay-clinical-solutions-retinol-05-set-990280260

Radiance Facial Peel: https://www.marykay.com/bstillings/en-us/products/skincare/collection/timewise-repair/timewise-repair-revealing-radiance-facial-peel-300524

As for in-office procedures, laser treatment can target most issues.  However, if you are dealing with more severe sun damage, like precancerous lesions, go directly to your dermatologist.

When do you need to be concerned about sun damage?

If you sustanied a lot of burns as a child (including blistering sunburns) a dermatologist can evaluate the extent of the issue.  Most importantly, make an appointment if you see a mole or spot that is brown, black, red or white change.  If you notice red scaly patches that come and go in the same location or non-healing lesions that persist longer than three weeks, visit your doctor.

How can you prevent Sun Damage?

To prevent further UV damage from occuring: PROPER SUN PROTECTION!  Use a SPF of 30 or higher daily.

Day Cream: https://www.marykay.com/bstillings/en-us/products/skincare/collection/timewise-repair/timewise-repair-volufirm-day-cream-sunscreen-broad-spectrum-spf-30-100903

Wear hats and avoid direct sunlight when possible.

Why Do Hands Age First?

We put a lot of effort into the skin care routines dedicated to our faces, necks, and chests, but we often forget about our hands, which are actually the first body parts to show the signs of time. Luckily, tending to them—and keeping them soft, supple, and free of dark spots for longer—is simple with a few preventative tips and tricks.

Hands First

Like the skin under our eyes, the dermis on our hands is thin and fragile. However, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman notes that (unlike our eyes) we tend to pay less attention to hand care and divert all of our efforts to our face. Due to this, our hands age "faster." "They are often just as exposed to the sun and environmental aggressors as our faces, but we don't protect them as diligently with SPF, makeup, and other blockers," Dr. Engelman explains. What's more, we use (and move) our hands even more than our faces. Think about it: We touch, grip, and wash our hands constantly. It's this constant motion that drives the formation of fine lines and wrinkles, and exacerbates other signs of aging, like dryness, dullness, and uneven texture.

Moisture Matters

A committed hand-care routine is key to keeping this area smooth and line-free long term. The first step? Your hands should be adequately hydrated at all times—which is easier said than done. According to cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Michele Green, hands lack sebaceous follicles, which means they do not naturally produce oil. To remedy this issue, Dr. Engelman recommends layering products for optimal hydration. "First apply oil, then a moisturizer or cream," she says. "Oils will penetrate deep into the skin, delivering active ingredients that can reduce the effects of aging. Moisturizer creates a barrier for the skin, locking in the moisture and any products that were used before it." Looking for a lotion to try at home? I like Satin Hands $12, which boasts nourishing shea butter.

SPF, Always

Sun protection is equally, if not more, important. While you might not think that your hands are in direct contact with the sun, if you drive, bike, regularly go on walks, or have an office with bright windows, they do. That's why Dr. Green says to remember to use and reapply SPF to this area regularly. Doing so will help prevent the formation of sunspots, while also protecting the hands against other signs of premature aging, as well as skin cancer. Dr. Green also recommends being mindful of just how much sun your hands get over time. Even when layered with moisturizer and SPF, prolonged exposure adds up, she says; with that in mind, she suggests wearing gloves while gardening or certain chores (like washing dishes) that may expose your hands to drying chemicals.

Reverse Damage

If your hands have started to show any tell-tale signs of aging or sun damage, consider using your facial masks on your hands. I've seen great results from women using the glycolic acid facial peel on their face and rubbing on the tops of their hands at the same time.  I've also seen results from the Clinical Solutions Retinol 0.5 on the back of the hands, pictured below.

How to Properly Blend Foundation Over Sunscreen

Everyone knows that sunscreen is a must—always, no matter the season, weather, or time of day (though, you can skip it at nighttime!). And though you understand its importance, you might not know how to layer base makup over SPF. If you're hoping to wear foundation, concealer, or powder overtop your sunscreen, it helps to know how to apply them to avoid any textural inconsistencies—an issue that might drive you to skip SPF application, which shouldn't be an option. That's why we are reading two makeup artists' posts and letting them explain everything you need to know about properly blending base on top of your sunscreen. Armed with their advice, you will be able to stay protected while you put your best face forward.

Ensure your formulas are compatible.

According to Cover FX lead makeup artist Megan Curtin, your sunscreen and foundation formulas must be compatible, which means they were created with ingredients that won't repel each other. This can lead to pilling, she notes. "Silicone is typically the culprit for causing pilling (when your product rolls up in tiny balls on your skin), but that doesn't mean you should avoid it altogether—just make sure you're not using too much of it in each of your products," she shares. "For instance, a lightweight moisturizer underneath a sunscreen oil will create a great dewy base for a liquid foundation. Try layering Timewise 3D Moisturizer with SPF $32, and CC Cream $22. Neither of them are heavily laden with silicone.

Let your sunscreen fully dry.

Another reason why certain sunscreen and foundation formulas don't blend well? The former wasn't yet dry before you applied the latter. "The key to successfully applying foundation over sunscreen is to allow the SPF to completely absorb—and then apply foundation as desired," says Paul Garcia, YSL Beauty's director of education and artistry. This practice goes beyond sunscreen and base application: It's best to allow your moisturizer, sunscreen, and primer to fully sink in before moving on to the next step, culminating in your foundation.

Use a face specific sunscreen.

For the best results, Garcia says to opt for a face-specific sunscreen formula—even one formatted into a moisturizer and to focus on blending it into skin before you even think about foundation. This will also help prevent pilling. You shouldn't, however, think that you're ready and set after your base has been applied; according to Garcia, SPF reapplication is a must, which is why he suggests stocking up on other face-centric sun protection products like face primer $20 that can be placed over makeup.

What Does Vitamin E Do For Your Lips?

Vitamin E is a well-known nutrient with a good reputation when it comes to lip care.  As an incredibly versatile ingredient, vitamin E brings many benefits to the lips including the following:

Moisturizing: as an outstanding moisturizer, Vitamin E restores skin hydration, keeping it soft and supple.  It is ideal for dry and cracked lips.

Softening: Evidence shows that Vitamin E boosts blood circulation and generates new skin cells, making your lips softer.

Protecting: Our lips are vulnerable to environmental damage and climate change. The restorative poser of E can protect the lips by revitalizing skin cells and strengthening its natural defensive barrier.

Repairing: Anti-inflammatory properties of Vitamin E help to soothe and heal damaged skin.  Red or inflamed, sore or swollen -this could also be a sign of infection so seek medical attention.

How Gluten Can Be Inflammatory for PCOS.

Gluten can trigger Zonulin, a protein in the gut.  Type 2 diabetic patients have shown increased zonulin also.  Glycoprotein present in wheat activates zonulin.

Zonulin causes the tight junctions in your gut lining to loosen up.  It turns out that gluten is a strong trigger of zonulin in some indiiduals.  No human being completely digests gluten. And in a small percentage of us, that undigested gluten triggers the release of sonulin and high levels of it.

This allows gluten to get through the gut and into the bloodstream.  A "leaky gut" is a red flag that something else is going on.

This causes chronic inflammatiation and further aggravating PCOS, an already inflammatory condition.  By reducing your leaky gut, you can improve other PCOS symptoms.  Some other health concerns conected to a leaky gut are obesity, diabetes, depression, asthma,....all also conected to PCOS.

This Gluten Free cake was a HIT for Father's Day.  I found the recipe in April 2021 Southern Living.

Choc-onut Balls...PCOS friendly recipe

Like all food choices, snacking can either help or hinder your PCOS.  I found this recipe in Kim Campbell's program "30 Day Challenge."  Follow her on Instagram for more recipe ideas: @smartpcoschoices.

To get skincare help with your PCOS, check out my Repair Adult Hormonal Acne in 20 minutes per week: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1164076597262404

Ingredients:

12 oz mixed almonds

4 oz butter

3.5 oz shredded coconut

1/3 cup of almond butter

1/2 cup of cacao powder

2 Tbsp chia seeds

1-2 Tbsp rice malt syrup

1 tsp of vanilla

1 tsp of cinnamon

1/4 tsp of seal salt.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.  Chop the nuts into a crumbly mixture in a food processor.  In a large mixing bowl, add the chopped nuts with all the other ingredients except the chia seeds and only half of the shredded coconut.

Combine making sure to mix the coconut oil and butter right through the dry ingredients.  The balls will hold together better if you mix well at this stage.  Add in the chia seeds to help bulk up the mixture.

Take small amounds of the mixture in your hands, and roll into balls.  Roll each ball in the remaining shredded coconut and place on the baking sheet.

Refrigerate for at least two hours to set.

Store in the fridge up to 2 weeks.

Why is a daily skincare system important to healthy skin?

What's the deal with skincare?

Does skincare actually make a difference?

Facts: Target Toning wrinkles around the eyes or mouth is not effective when used in isolation.  Just like in the gym, target toning the backs of your arms in isolation of cardio and full body toning is completely ineffective (says the ME who has been a certified fitness instructor and trainer since 2001).

I started out with a simple treatment plan that I did in an esthetician's office 3 times a year....but I really didn't see results until I started washing my face....lol!  I did it backwards.

A facemask will not cure acne if you are still going to bed at night with makeup and oil on your skin!

1.  Why is a comprehensive system so important?

  • Many problems can be solved by starting a good system.  I've talked to lots of women over the past 4 years about skincare issues.  They are quick to ask "How do I fix......", but when I ask them "Well, what are you using now?"  The answer I get is "Really nothing particular."  Many times we can reduce problems like Adult Acne, Scars, Dark Spots, Fine Lines, dull skin just from started a high quality system designed for that issue in particular.  Once we reduce it, then we can look at supplements to really fix it!
  • Before starting a specialized supplement....you need to get your Ph levels in balance!  Control the oil or the lack of oil and get your skin into balance before targeting an issue with a supplement.
  • Daily skincare is the foundation of healthy skin that is going to delay signs of aging and signs of sun damage.
2.  What is included in a comprehensive system?
  • All Dermatologists reports that I have read all agree on this:  A cleanser and a moisturizer.  Those to elements are the base of a good system.  Better systems will include a Day moisturizer with SPF, a Night moisturizer, and separate moisturizer for the eye area.  But they all include a cleanser and a way to stay hydrated to control excess oil.
3.  What to avoid?
  • Chemical Warfare:  Using products from multiple lines creates chemical warfare on your skin.  You could be skipping a key ingredient or getting too much of another ingredient.  Your skin is not going to know which way it's going...LOL!
  • Not all products are created equally.  So....now is not the time to save money!  Your skin is your largest organ, and you pay for what you get.  So...I'll leave that thought right there.
  • Laziness.  Don't invest in a comprehensive system that you know WILL work, and then get too lazy to use it.  You are better than that!
In summary, if you are not happy with your skin, you should START with a comprehensive system will the key elements of a cleanser and a moisturizer that is all within the same high quality line.

Begin a new habit that will change the way you look and feel about yourself.

For a limited time (June 2021), I have $30 off vouchers for the skin care system I use and $20 vouchers off a different skincare system.  Reach out to me to decide which system is best for you and to claim a voucher.

Goal-Getters

Tips on how to set goals and get results.

Write it down: Goals are different and unique as we are, and there are no wrong responses.

Time Resources: Do you have the time to put in to achieve what you're after? In order to achieve our goals, we need to set realistic expectations in our businesses and make adjustments, where needed.

Do The Math: What is it going to take to reach your goal? If the goal is to replace a husband's second job income, what is that number and what does that require? Then, break it down by the numbers and work them into your financial goal.

Break It Down: A quantum leap is not a quantum change, but instead a one percent change or increase that magnifies over time.  Bigger goals can sometimes be paralyzing, so focus just on the next step.

Get to Work: If you want something you've never had before, you have to do something you've never done before.  What will that be?

Share Your Goal: There's real power in telling others what you want to accomplish. Especially on those days you feel like hanging it up. People in your life want you to succeed.

Visualize Your Success: Tape it up!

Don't Stop Until the Buzzer Sounds: So many times, amazing things happen just before you are ready to give up. Work intentionally and consistently and that can pay off in big rewards.

Don't Give Up: If you're successful - congratulations! But it's ok if we don't reach every goal set.  Reach for the moon and land among the stars.  Trust the process. If it's happened for others, it can happen for you.  Don't give up.  Learn from the process - what worked, what didn't and adjust. Next time you'll get it....and then some!

PCOS Meal Prep Tips

"Fail to prepare, prepare to fail!"  How to avoid common obstacles!

With any new eating habit, life will get in the way.  When life gets in the way, frozen pizzas come out! TRUTH!  Get one-step ahead of any predictable barrier to success.  This includes:

1.  Plan out the meals for 1 week alongside your family's schedule: "I was going to make..... but forgot we had baseball" can't come up.

2. Make a grocery list for all the needed items and shop only 1 time per week:  "I was going to cook ....but didn't have any ......" can't happen.

3.  Prep as much on your day off (for me it's Sunday) as possible: "Lunch is my difficult meal because I'm so sick of ......" can't happen.

4.  Meal prep larger meals in 2 days.  Chop one day....cook it the next day...have enough for leftovers: "I get home from work and I'm just too tired to do anything" can't stay in the way.

It might surprise you to learn how common your barriers to success are and why so many people are not successful with diet regimes that require fresh cooking.  Try to anticipate the different problems you have, and come up with a creative way to avoid, eliminate, or mitigate them.

How does Micellar Water change the Skincare industry?

Just 8 years ago, micellar water was a niche insider secret deep within French pharmacies.  It wasn't heard of unless you took a beauty pilgrimage to Paris with an insider.  Since then, this humble water has reached stratospheric heights.....and it's about to get even bigger and you have a chance to get on the rocket ship!

What is Micellar Water?

"My-sell-or" water is an effective makeup remover.  It's made from purified water to counter the minerals and heavy metals found in tap water and then infused with hydrating ingredients and mild surfactants which break down oils.

How is it different from cleansers?

Other cleansers may strip your skin.  Micellar Water will be much gentler.  It focuses on attracting just the makeup and grime.

How is it different from toners?

It actually looks similar to a toner, BUT the texture will be much thicker than a toner.  The main purpose is to remove makeup.  The purpose of a toner is to rebalance the skin's PH after cleansing.  Toners prep skin before moisturizer and can also exfoliate.

The Rocket Ship is Taking OFF!

This month, we launched a brand new Micellar Water designed to attract impurities, break down makeup, cleanse gently, lightly hydrate...... all with no need to rinse!  Take it on trips, the gym.....

My personal business grew when we released Retinol in January.  I'm ready to see it double again with this simple product.  Not only will it fly out of the warehouse, it's so simple and easy to share...because it's what American Women are currently searching for!

If someone offered you a seat on a rocket ship, do you accept or do you unsubscribe?  To be crystal clear, I see this product as a Rocket Ship for mompreneurs and boss babes.  Of course, I have a full strategy for you to see results in your own business on day 1.

If you are interested in getting on the Rocket Ship, apply to join my team here:  https://forms.gle/gC6D5y6jBheKArMr6

Chin Acne? or Forehead Acne? and What that reveals about your skin type.

50% of 20-29 year-olds suffer from Adult Acne.

25% of 40-49 year-olds suffer from Adult Acne.

Adult acne is more than aesthetic, it's painful and it can scar.

Knowing what type of acne you suffer from also determines how you should treat it.

Acne on the forehead = examine the type of hair products you are using

Acne on the cheek = wash pillowcases more regularly to remove excess oil, and wash face thoroughly.

Acne on the chin = Hormonal Acne...which is more painful, and harder to treat.

This week I launched a free training on "3 Ways to Treat Hormonal Acne Different from Teenage Acne."

1. Try to avoid hormonal treatment.  This can lead to even more hormonal irregularities, blood clots, and high blood pressure.

2. Retinoids and Gylcolic Acid are 2 great topical ingredients to work into a comprehensive skincare routine.

3. Overall Skin Health includes washing your face every morning and evening, applying no more than a pea size amount of any product, wearing sunscreen every day, use only noncomedogenic products to reduce the risk of clogging pores, and a diet of non inflammatory foods.

If you would like to know more about Good Skin Health, complete the skin survey and results will be emailed to you.

Come Clean

The daily act of washing your face may seem mundance, but it's actually the foundation of healthy, glowing skin.

1.  Time it Right: twice a day.

2.  Work it in and Rinse: with clean hands and luke warm water.  If its too hot, you are pulling out moisture from your skin.

3.  Lock in Benefits: pat dry and use a moisturizer right after.

Choose the right cleanser!
  1. Oily/Combination Skin: it is important to remove all your skin's natural oils. (Timewise 3D Cleanser for Combo/Oily Skin)
  2. Acne Prone: If you have hormonal acne and bacterial acne....wash with a Benzoyl Perozide first to fight bacteria (Clearproof Cleanser) before launching into exfoliator for hormonal acne.
  3. Dry Skin: Creamy formulas are your friend but avoid irritating ingredients like salicylic acid. (Repair Volu-Firm Cleanser)
  4. Sensitive Skin: Have hormonal acne and Rosecea? It's possible...because Rosecea gets worse in your 40's. (Naturally 100% all natural and vegan Cleanser, then exfoliate, then follow by Moisture Renewing Gel Mask).

Get Hydrated

Inspired by February's edition of Martha Stewart Living magazine, I decided to dive deep into what specifically creates dry skin this time of year.  With months of low humidity (when we here in the South will experience a drastic change in the next two months into months of HIGH humidity) and heat blasting throughout your house, your skin will dry out!  Now is the best time to rehydrate your skin.

Dial Back The Hot Showers.  Although a hot shower feels amazing on a 27 degree day, the hot water actually strips the body of moisture.

Turn Down The Temperature.  Artificial heat is dry heat and will dry out your skin, and can cause nose bleeds.  Dial back the heat and wear layers.  One trick Steve and I use is we lower the heat at night but sleeping on a heated mattress pad.  That way the air we breath is cooler, allowing for less congestion.

1. Hair and Scalp. The Moroccan Oil is great for hair.  I also use the Mary Kay Naturally Nourishing Oil $48 on hair and cuticles.

2.  Lips.  Prevent chapping by dabbing on balm after brushing your teeth and eating.  The Shea Butter Balm is amazing and only $12.

3.  Hands. Sanitizing gels that live in our bags and cars have at least 60% alcohol.  Rehydrate with Satin Hands cream $12.

4.  Knees and Elbows. These joints are weight-bearing so they naturally have thicker skin.  Extra Emollient Night Cream  leaves skin supple and not scratched up.  $15

5.  Legs.  If you shave in the winter, lol....that was a big IF...razors sweep away your skin's natural oils.  Use a shaving wash to protect the skin like Mary Kay Wash and Shave $16, but them immediately moisturize the skin stat!  Moisturizer penetrates more deeply into still-damp skin.  I prefer the Mint Bliss energizing feet and leg cream. $11

6.  Feet.  Calluses and cracks and even bleed in the winter when they dry out more.  I use the Satin Hands Softener and Scrub on my feet with a pumice stone in the shower that I buy at the Dollar Tree.  $36 for Satin Hands Set

Stuck?

I'm in a hotel room, 900 miles from home, with no power or running water, located on the 5th floor, I have a rental car that can't go through snow, all flights are canceled for at least 2 days, the external temperature is 23 degrees, and there is ice and snow on the ground.

I have never felt so "stuck" before in my life.

Stuck =  helpless, hopeless, confused, conflicted

Do you currently feel stuck?

"Getting unstuck is not easily done," Dr. Seuss, Oh The Places You Will Go.

Getting unstuck is a MIND game.  Here is what I found that works.....

1.  Let go of the past (or in other words, what you can't change).

2.  Chanage your perspective (and your attitude).

3.  Take small steps to start.

4.  Explore your purpose.

5.  Belive in yourself.

6.  Practice hope, and humor.

7. Consider a professional.....reach up!

For the record: I took a nap to change my perspective, let go of the knowledge I would "lose" some money,  I did a brain dump to explore my purpose and refocus, then I took a small step by zipping my suitcase and saying "Steve, let's go."  He was my professional snow driver.  And, we made a 19 hour drive home!

How to Care for Your Dry Skin, According to a Dermatologist....from BHG 1/5/21

Keep your body hydrated this winter with these expert tips.

By Jennifer Aldrich

I'm barely going outside right now, but my skin is still feeling the effects of the cold, harsh winter. As someone with dry, sensitive skin, the low temperatures and the lack of humidity can make my body feel super itchy and flaky, which are major signs that I need to moisturize ASAP, says Orit Markowitz M.D., a board-certified dermatologist at Mount Sinai in New York City. She says these are symptoms of severely dry skin, and no one should wait until it gets to this point. "If you start to see a white film, or your skin gets red when you scratch it and it doesn't go away, or your skin just isn't as supple or smooth, you need to manage it so it doesn't get worse," she explains. Just like your face and your hands, your body needs lots of moisture, too.

Here are Markowitz's top tips on how to moisturize your dry skin this winter.

Pay Attention to the Formula:

Choosing the best products is pretty easy. When it comes to moisturizer, the thicker the formula, the better, Markowitz explains. So, the best would be an ointment, then a cream, next a lotion, and lastly, gels and most oils.
When it comes to washing your body, Markowitz says to avoid shower gels and anything with a strong fragrance as they can all be drying and irritating.

Moisturize Right After the Shower

The best time to apply your cream is right after you shower, and it doesn't matter what time of day it is. You just need to take the time to moisturize thoroughly, Markowitz says. "Once you get out of the shower, pat your body dry, but do not rub or scrub," Markowitz says. Then, apply your thick moisturizer to seal the moisture into your skin.  I apply my body cream right after I put toner on my face.

Use a Humidifier

Even if you're not spending much time outside in the cold, the air inside your home can still negatively affect your skin. A humidifier increases the amount of moisture in the air and can help with dry skin.

Don't Scrub Your Skin

Markowitz says to never harshly scrub your skin in the shower, especially with micro beads. "Skin is your barrier from the outside environment; when you’re scraping your skin, you're compromising your barrier," she explains. "Originally, you'll think, 'Hey, my skin feels so smooth,' but over time, the skin requires more and more products to repair it."

God's Not Done

I was scrolling back through old posts.....and I found this entry from 2015.  I have no idea who the friend was I was talking about, or what the problem was....but I felt that the thoughts I conjured up for her/him that day could easily be applied to anyone today:

I'm sitting here...confused and hurting...for a friend.  When life throws us a damaging blow, how do we respond?  With guilt?  With anger?  With sadness?  With resentment?  Its hard to find the peace and love in some moments in time.  Everyday in my car before I walk into work I ask God "Let's make something great happen today."  I have to keep hearing the words "God's not done."  But, when the bad news doesn't stop how is it SO hard to keep hearing this?  I don't know.  I can't know. However what I do know is that God's not done.  He can't be done.  There has to be more to his plan than this.  He does have a plan for us all, and its is good.
"For I know the plans I have for you," says the LORD. "They are plans of good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope." Jeremiah 29:11 All we can do is wait for it.  If we keep doing what is right every day, the blessings will come at just the right time - his time.   "So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone-especially to those in the family of faith" Galatians 6:9-10 We ask for him to bless us even when all we see are pains and brick walls, but we ask him to bless us so that we can enlarge his territory.  "He was the one who prayed to the God of Israel, "Oh that you would bless me and expand  my territory! Please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all trouble and pain!" And God granted him his request." 1 Chronicles 4:10  Somehow, these burdens may or may not be part of his plan for us, but his plans are that we enlarge his territory.  So, then by process of association, how are/can these burdens be part of the blessing?   I hope we find an answer..I don't have it...but God will never be done! And he hasn't left you my friend. There is work still to be done.

Fresh Year, Fresh Skin...Skin Care 411

Who's ready for a new year?

Who's ready to keep it simple this year?

Dr. Cristi Gomez, Director of Product Safety and Environmental Toxicology, and David Gan, Senior Principal Scientist, Skin Research and Technology answered questions for 2021.

Q: Why do I need a skin care routine?

Christi: Skin is the largest organ, made up of millions of skin cells, and it renews itself every 28 hours.  That's a lot to take care of, and a skin care routine helps do that.

Q: I don't like a lot of steps in my daily routine.  What is the bare minmum I should do?

David: At the very least cleanse and moisturize each morning and night.  Also use suncreen to decrease the risk of skin cancer.  Tip: Use a moisturizer with SPF to avoid an extra step.

Q: Why is cleansing important?

Cristi: Washing your face morning and night helps remove makeup, dirt, grime and impurities that can lead to blocked pores and breakouts.  Makeup tends to migrate to our fine lines and creases while we sleep.  You will wake up looking fresher if you remove makeup and the day's dirt and grime at night.

Q: Why is moisturizing important?

David: Our skin naturally produces oil to moisturize itself, but it's important to replenish moisture after cleansing skin.  Skipping moisturizer can lead to extra oil production or dry skin.  If you have oily skin, an oil-free moisturizer can be a good option.
